What is Assisted Living?
Assisted Living is designed to help maintain maximum
independence in a home-like setting, while providing individualized
care and
assistance when needed. Assisted Living “offers a unique mix of
security and independence, privacy and companionship, and physical
and social well
being.” (National Center for Assisted Living)
Who lives in Assisted Living?
The typical resident is an older
adult that can no longer manage at home, but does not require
the complex, 24 hour care
of traditional
long-term care facilities such as a nursing home.
Who does not qualify
for Assisted Living?
The State of Iowa states Assisted Living
communities cannot admit someone who is 1) bed-bound; or 2) requires
routine two-person
assistance with standing, transfer or evacuation; or 3) is dangerous
to self or other residents; or 4) is in an acute stage of alcoholism,
drug addiction or uncontrolled mental illness; or 5) is under the
age of 18; or 6) requires more than part-time health-related care;
or 7) on a routine basis, has unmanageable incontinence.
How is
the bill paid?
Residents or families generally pay the cost of
assisted living from their own financial resources. Some types
long-term care insurance
may reimburse for all or a portion of the assisted living cost.
How
is the cost determined?
The cost of is based on the type of apartment
and the types of services each resident requires. Our Registered
Nurse will complete
an initial assessment to determine the service level.
What is the
length of commitment?
There is no long-term commitment. All rent
is on a month-to-month basis. A 30-day notice is required before
resident moves out.
Are Residents allowed to have Pets?
Pets are allowed at Vriendschap
Village. There are size requirements as well as a Pet Deposit,
and guidelines regarding the owner’s
responsibilities and the pet’s behavior.
May I have friends
come and visit?
Residents’ friends and family are always welcome.
If staying for a meal, a reservation is required and there
is a nominal
charge. Residents are also encouraged
to have celebrations or meetings in one of the many common areas.
